Where this list comes from
- Oral account: No order-fixing source exists. The attribution of the set to Adi Shankara is widely repeated but carries no footnote in the reference literature reached, and no pre-modern attestation of the four as a set was found. A government rail itinerary exists but is logistics, not doctrine, and it visits three other cities in between. en.wikipedia.org · seen 2026-09-18
A note for the curious
No order. No text, matha, temple authority or government source prescribing a sequence for these four could be found, and the finding is firm rather than provisional. Note also that the common framing — that Adi Shankara defined the four and founded a matha at each — is internally inconsistent at the southern point: the southern matha is at Sringeri in Karnataka, not at Rameswaram.
