Mangalya puja

மாங்கல்யம்మాంగళ్యముಮಾಂಗಲ್ಯ ಸೂತ್ರതാലിमंगलसूत्र

Worship undertaken to obtain a marriage, or for a husband's wellbeing. The name covers several genuinely different observances, which are kept apart here.

Before you take this on

  • Where the observance involves fasting, the diabetes guidance applies: these fall into the frequent weekly and infrequent annual categories, both of which are covered by published advice on counselling beforehand and adjusting medication that carries hypoglycaemia risk.
  • No pregnancy-specific guidance on fasting for these observances could be found.

What you do

  1. Establish first which observance you mean — the temple offering, the weekly vrata, or the Friday vratam before the full moon of Shravana. They are not the same thing and are not performed the same way.
  2. For a temple offering, buy it at the counter under the name that temple uses. Swayamvara archana and mangalya puja are different listings.
  3. For a vrata, keep it on the day it falls, in the month it falls.

Why it is done

More than one account explains this custom. They are given separately because they are separate — merging them into one story would invent a consensus that does not exist.

As a temple offering for marriage

At Thirumandhamkunnu in Malappuram the state tourism department records the belief that mangalya puja removes obstacles and ensures matrimonial bliss. Nothing beyond that could be sourced — not who performs it, not what is offered, not the timings or the fee. The three-year schedule of rising payments widely described online appears on no temple or government page, and the temple's own site and the regional devaswom board could not be reached.

Swayamvara archana, a differently named offering

Worth separating out because the names get confused: at Sabarimala the marriage-seeking offering is not called mangalya puja at all. The devaswom board's rate card lists Swayamvara Archana at the Malikappuram shrine at ₹75. All fifty-five items on that card were checked and mangalya puja is not among them.

Mangala Gauri vrata, a separate observance

A weekly observance kept by women on Tuesdays in the month of Shravana, worshipping Shiva and Parvati, and keyed to the five years following marriage. The attribution of this vrata to the Skanda Purana or the Bhavishyottara Purana appears everywhere without a chapter or verse and could not be traced to any text.

The mangalsutra as a Vedic rite

It is widely held that tying the mangalsutra or thali is prescribed in the Grhya Sutras. The two principal wedding chapters were read directly: Asvalayana I.7 and Paraskara I.8. Both prescribe the taking of the hand and the seven steps, along with circumambulation of the fire, treading on the stone, and the offering of fried grain. Neither mentions tying any thread, cord or ornament around the bride's neck. Asvalayana's chapter even opens by conceding that customs vary by country and village and that it states only what is commonly accepted. The scope of this check is two chapters, not the whole corpus — but the claim does not survive them, and reference scholarship independently records the necklace as not a systematic element of Hindu marriage, historically absent in several communities.

Put simply

Worship done to find a husband or wife, or to keep a husband well. Different places call it different things and do it differently.
