The story of this place

Told in: The temple's own tradition

The sage Indrakila's hill

In the temple's tradition a sage, Indrakila, does penance on the hill above the Krishna; the goddess, pleased, makes the hill her permanent home, and it is called Indrakeeladri after him. A separate strand of local tradition places Arjuna's penance for Shiva's Pashupata weapon on the same hill. We have not yet found either in a text or in the devasthanam's own publications; both are told here as they are told locally.
