Where this list and its order comes from
- Scholarship: Ajay S. Rawat, Garhwal Himalaya, Indus Publishing, 2002, pp. 12–13, via the reference literature, which gives the five in the descending flow sequence of their occurrence: Vishnuprayag, Nandaprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, Devprayag. The 'descending flow sequence' phrasing itself carries no inline footnote. en.wikipedia.org · seen 2026-09-18
A note for the curious
Five river confluences, not five temples — members point at the place registry. The enumeration order and the travel order run in opposite directions: the canonical listing follows the Alaknanda downstream from Vishnuprayag, while a pilgrim driving up from Rishikesh meets Devprayag first and Vishnuprayag last, and a state enterprise page calls Devprayag 'the first Prayag on way to Badrinath'. The ordinals here follow the downstream enumeration.
