Archana

அர்ச்சனைअर्चन

An offering made in your name while the deity's names are recited — 108 of them, or a thousand. You give your name, lineage and birth star, and they are spoken into the rite so that it is performed on your behalf.

Before you take this on

  • Reporting times at large temples can be pre-dawn — 04:00 at Tirumala.
  • Ticket quotas at Tirumala are released by lottery and queues for them can be dangerous. Six people died in a crowd crush at Tirupati in January 2025 while queuing for darshan tokens.

What you do

  1. Buy an archana ticket at the seva counter or through the temple's booking site.
  2. Give the priest your name, your gotra — your lineage — and your nakshatra, the star you were born under.
  3. Listen for them in the sankalpa, the statement of whom the rite is being performed for.
  4. Stand while the names are recited, each one marked by a flower, a leaf or a pinch of kumkum placed at the deity's feet.
  5. Take the prasadam handed back at the end. At Tirumala this is a single laddu.

Before you start

  • A ticket.
  • Your gotra and nakshatra, if you know them.

Why it is done

More than one account explains this custom. They are given separately because they are separate — merging them into one story would invent a consensus that does not exist.

Shaiva Agama — Kamikagama

Arcana is the daily rite of worship, and it has its own chapter in the Kamikagama — the fourth, the Arcanavidhipatala — with the fifth covering its ancillaries. The text is a Shaiva Agama of some twelve thousand verses.

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams

TTD describes the seva as the recital of the Lord's various names, and holds that archana at Tirumala is documented to 1518. The underlying inscription has not been examined here, so this is recorded as the temple's own account of its history rather than as established dating.

Put simply

You give your name, and the priest says it out loud along with a hundred and eight names of the god, so the offering counts as yours.

Where it is observed

At temples generally, rather than at particular ones.
