Prasadam

பிரசாதம்ప్రసాదంಪ್ರಸಾದപ്രസാദംप्रसाद

Food offered to the deity first and then given to you. Received in the right hand. At Puri it is bought at an open-air market inside the temple wall; at Tirumala it is a laddu handed over at the counter as you leave.

Before you take this on

  • Allergens are not labelled anywhere. The Tirupati laddu contains ghee, cashew, raisin, cardamom, sugar and gram flour — dairy and tree nut. Puri's confectionery uses ghee, milk and cheese.
  • Puri's Sankudi mahaprasad is steam-cooked rice and vegetables sold in open air at ambient temperature and does not keep. The dry Sukhila items do.
  • In September 2024 a laboratory report on ghee supplied to TTD found adulteration, and the supplier was terminated and blacklisted. Whether the adulterant was animal fat specifically is contested: the temple's executive officer identified it as vanaspati, and scientists noted the report could not conclusively identify the substance. The adulteration is established; the identification is not.
  • Puri's Mahaprasad is described by the temple as casteless, but the temple itself admits only Hindus, and the food is sold inside the enclosure.

What you do

  1. Present your ticket at the prasadam counter after darshan, or simply join the queue where none is needed.
  2. Hold out your right hand to receive it.
  3. At Puri, buy cooked mahaprasad at the Ananda Bazar inside the outer enclosure rather than at a counter — only the temple's own Suar and Mahasuar servitors may sell it.

Why it is done

More than one account explains this custom. They are given separately because they are separate — merging them into one story would invent a consensus that does not exist.

Pancharatra

The Paramapurushasamhita treats prasada in its fourth chapter as food handed out to devotees — when, where and how it is to be taken. The same corpus uses the word in a second and quite different sense, as divine grace: the Padmasamhita and the Paramasamhita both define it that way, and the Lakshmitantra gives a prasada-mantra. The food sense and the grace sense are not the same claim and are not merged here.

Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration

At Puri the temple administration is explicit about what makes food into Mahaprasad: it is steam-cooked, offered to Jagannatha, and then offered to the goddess Bimala — and it is the offering to Bimala that completes it. It is cooked only in earthen pots over firewood, and sold at the Ananda Bazar in the north-east corner of the outer enclosure, where the administration describes people of all castes and creeds eating together.

Put simply

Food is given to the god first, and then given to you. You take it with your right hand.

Where it is observed

At temples generally, rather than at particular ones.
